Beyond the Pixels: Dan's Personal Approach to Web Design for NFPs.
From an early age, I’ve always felt a compelling pull towards working with Not-For-Profit (NFP) clients, especially those that grapple with mental health and disability issues. This may seem unrelated, but I think my lifelong journey with Klinefelter syndrome [diagnosed 5 years ago], a condition characterised by an extra X chromosome in males, has shaped this passion and purpose.
Growing up, I often felt a little out of step with others, which was sometimes a struggle, but it also nurtured a profound empathy in me. As a person living with Klinefelter syndrome, I’ve always had a deep-seated affinity for those who face their own challenges in navigating the contours of society, as I do.
My condition remained undiagnosed for the majority of my life, and it was only in my late forties that the missing piece of the puzzle was revealed. While I appear no different from anyone else, this diagnosis brought clarity and understanding, allowing me to see past experiences and challenges through a new lens. I saw how this ‘difference’ had, in fact, been a powerful asset.
School was not a smooth ride for me. The usual academic trajectory eluded me, and I faced episodes of bullying due to physical differences linked to my condition. Yet, I found a silver lining. My fascination with computers and my deep connection with the subject of Society and Culture brought me joy and success.
This path wasn’t without its fair share of battles. But through it all, my fierce sense of justice and yearning for fairness remained unscathed. These trials strengthened my resilience, reinforced my determination, and nurtured a profound empathy for others.
My mother’s unwavering faith in me and her recognition of my potential played an integral role in setting the course of my journey by buying me an Apple IIc [a long time ago!]. It was her encouragement that ultimately led me to channel my passion for computers into establishing my own business, MerlinFX, in 2001.
Fast forward to the present, and I am deeply grateful for my journey. It is my unique experiences that fuel my passion to serve others and make a difference. Cindy, my long-term partner, often says that my perspective on life, shaped by my condition, brings a special flavour to my personality. My ‘quirkiness’ is what makes me uniquely me.
Through sharing this glimpse of my life, I hope to provide an insight into the person behind the work.
